PEM/PALS Course - two-day (PALS - 2-days)
This course is designed to train physicians to assess and manage critically-ill children during the first hours in the emergency department. The main aim is to help the clinician detect an imminently toxic child and institute treatment without delay. The course consists of presentations, practical skills stations, and case-based discussions. The skills covered include assisted and mechanical ventilation, advanced airway, vascular access (intraosseous and central), and chemical/electrical cardioversion. The discussions entail pediatric trauma, neonatal and medical emergencies, and common Central Nervous System (CNS) problems. The course content is based on the previous APLS course. PALS course is included in this course and participants will also obtain their PALS certificate by completing this course.
Course Length:2 days (8 hours per day)
Intended Audience
This course is intended for physicians who are routinely involved in the care of critically-ill or injured children. These include emergency room physicians, pediatricians, and senior emergency medicine and pediatric trainees.

Accreditation:
This Group Learning activity has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for 2 credits per hour. This Section 2 Traineeship program has been certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for 2 credits per hour.
PREREQUISITES:
Current Heart & Stroke Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certificate
PALS Pre-course Self-Assessment Certificate (passing score = 70%)
EXAMINATION:
Participation as team member in all simulation scenarios and as team leader in at least one scenario
Written exam (must achieve 70% or better)
