Pediatric Advanced Life Support - Provider Course (PALS Provider - 2-days)
The Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) provider course is a Heart and Stroke Foundation course that teaches knowledge content and skills required in resuscitating a critically-ill infant and child. The course consists of interactive sessions, mock codes, and case scenarios. The topics covered include respiratory distress/failure, shock (hypovolemic, cardiogenic, distributive, and obstructive), pediatric dysrhythmias (bradycardia, narrow-complex and wide-complex tachycardia), and circulatory collapse/arrest (asystole, PEA, ventricular fibrillation). The skills demonstrated and practiced consist of the latest trends in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use and defibrillation, vascular access (peripheral/central venous, intraosseous), and oxygen delivery and positive pressure ventilation (bag-and-mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation, and mechanical ventilation).
Course Length:2 days (7 hours per day)
Intended Audience
Personnel involved in the care of critically-ill children including Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Room physicians, nurses, trainees, technicians and allied health care professionals as well as personnel who respond to cardiovascular emergencies such as paramedics

Accreditation:
This Group Learning activity has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for 2 credits per hour. This Section 2 Traineeship program has been certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for 2 credits per hour.
PREREQUISITES:
Current Heart & Stroke Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certificate
PALS Pre-course Self-Assessment Certificate (passing score = 70%)
